When I was young for a few years when I heard the word "would" as in people saying "I would" it would annoy me as it sounded conditional to me and I thought that the people saying it were very conservative.
I challenged a poster on a website about it once though and he corrected me grammatically and since then I have no problem with use of the word.
Anyway I read a respected Irish journalist say the same thing about the word being "conditional" in a column a while back and I thought of it tonight so I ran the question through ChatGPT and I got the below response - my highlights in bold. The guy who corrected me on it years ago was right. 😊
