Writing — DJP (2025)

I did Honours English and Irish in school and studied Journalism in college for three years

twenty years ago and only learned recently from ChatGPT of the difference between a hyphen and the

two dashes! It's a small thing but to use them correctly can make your writing look more

professional I think! I have started to use the en dash recently, I am yet to use the em dash, but I am not

going to be too rigid about using it because while I think using it often looks a bit more professional in

some situations I think it looks a bit too much. I am only learning this though so don't quote me on the

area. :)

The different dashes often don't display on Blogger like on the heading of this post.

Update - I have just learned that although Blogger does not accept the en dash in post titles it does

publish the em dash in them. 😊

(I have now updated the relevant post titles on this blog under a keyword search for my name here at

Darren J. Prior and of the post titles under this as Gaeilge label here as well – I am not going to change

anymore but I might use the em dash in post  titles in general on this blog going forward from now on).

Another update  +

I am only going to use it the em dash for the titles of those 2 above labels on this blog. Hopefully

Blogger will at some stage enable us to use the en dash in post titles – using the em dash in post titles

make the posts look a bit too serious but they look better with it compared to with a hyphen I think.
